Last season’s 61-49 loss to the Rancho Christian Eagles in the second round of the State Championships was fresh on the minds of the Etiwanda Eagles .

This year, Etiwanda was looking to get the win. But, they new it would be a tough one as Rancho Christian has players on the roster that had much more height that Etiwanda.

After jumping to an 8-0 run in the first quarter, Etiwanda went into the second quarter with a 17-12 lead.

The game remained a close one going into halftime as Etiwanda only led by two points, 30-28.

In the third quarter Rancho Christian began to jump ahead early on scoring five unanswered points. Rancho Christian’s scoring burst helped put them in the lead 45-41 at the end of the third quarter.

Rancho Christian continued to crash the boards the fourth quarter with a 9-0 scoring run led by junior guard Jaden Byers who scored the games highest points with 20.

Etiwanda head coach Dave Kleckner was called for a technical foul in the fourth quarter that possibly gave Rancho Christian momentum.

However, Etiwanda led by the team’s leading scorer Jahmai Mashack with 19 points were able to hold on and get the victory over Rancho Christian 67-61.

Etiwanda will play Mater Dei on Saturday in the second round of the Open Division State Championships. The last time these two teams played was in the 2018 CIF-SS Open Division Semi Finals and the Eagles lost to Mater Dei 76-66.
