The Chino Cowboys opened the 2023 prep football season in an exciting way with a 27-26 overtime win over Laguna Beach.

Chino led 17-0 at halftime as quarterback Diego Ogata scored on two touchdown runs, 21 and 2 yards, and kicker Brody Quizon with a 37 yard field goal in the first half.

Laguna Beach, came back in the third quarter for their first score of the game. Quarterback, Jackson Kollock ran the ball into the end-zone from 2 yards out to put the Breakers on the scoreboard and trailed Chino 17-7.

Chino responded with a 28 yard field goal kick from Quizon that split the uprights and the Cowboys extended their lead over the 2022 Division 9 Champions 20-7 with 8:28 remaining in the game.

Laguna Beach continued the comeback as Kollack threw a long 67 yard touchdown pass that made it a 20-14 game.

On the very next drive for Chino, the Breakers defense stopped the Cowboys at the Laguna Beach seven yard line. Chino elected to go for the 24 yard field goal attempt. However, the PAT was blocked and Laguna Beach took over on downs on their own 32 yard line with 3:25 left in the game.

Laguna Beach marched to the Chino 11 yard line. Kollock ran to the right side and with four seconds left threw a pass into the end-zone that was tipped by a Chino defender. The ball was deflected into the hands of the Breakers Brock Donaldson in the end-zone for the game tying score as time expired.

Chino blocked the extra point attempt that would have given the Breakers the win and sent the game into overtime.

In overtime, Chino scored first as Blanco ran the ball from six yards out into the end-zone for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was good and the Cowboys regained the lead 27-20.

Laguna Beach responded with a seven play drive that saw Kollock run the ball from the one yard line into the end-zone. The Breakers trailed 27-26 and made the decision to go for the two-point conversion.

The pass from Kollock was incomplete and Chino went on to win the game 27-26.

Chino is now 1-0 and Laguna Beach is 0-1 going into Week 1 of the prep football season.
