El Toro went into Week 3 looking for their first win in the 2023 prep football season and it happened in an exiting way for Chargers fans.
In the fourth quarter, trailing 16-14, the Chargers drove the ball to the Brahmas 16-yard line and with one second left in the game, kicker Gianluco Damato split the uprights. El Toro picked up the win as time expired and the Chargers rushed onto the field in celebration.
El Toro scored first in the game as the Chargers Cody LaCompte ran the ball into the end zone from two yards out. That gave the Chargers the lead 7-0 with 6:39 remaining in the first quarter.
Diamond Bar would score on the 24-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quinton Mendoza to wide receiver Abram Mejia. That tied the game 7-7 with 4:34 in the second quarter.
Penalties hurt both teams as a Chargers drive was pushed back to their own four yard line. On 3rd and 24, El Toro quarterback Jack Mckelvy was sacked in the end zone for the safety. Diamond Bar had a 9-7 lead with 3:24 remaining in the first half.
However, Mckelvy showed his running abilities as the El Toro quarterback took the ball 35 yards into the end zone to retake the lead 14-9 with 11:49 left in the third quarter.
Mendoza would pick up his second touchdown pass as the Brahmas quarterback on 3rd and 7 found wide receiver Brian Vu from 26-yards out. Diamond Bar regained the lead 16-14 with 5:06 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter Diamond Bar drove to the El Toro two yard line, but penalties moved the Brahmas back. On a fourth and long situation, Diamond Bar was unable to get the first down and El Toro took over on downs. The Chargers drove into the Brahmas territory which set up the winning field goal and El Toro’s first win of the season.
Diamond Bar (2-2) will travel in Week 4 to play Paloma Valley (3-1)
