
It was a playoff atmosphere as fans packed the Ayala High School football stadium to watch the 20th meeting of the Chino Hills Huskies and Ayala Bulldogs in the annual Battle for the Bone game.
Ayala, who has won the last five consecutive games, posted the first points of the game when senior running back Marquis Monroe ran 53 yards into the end zone for the touchdown. The Bulldogs took the 7-0 lead with 8:13 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs extended their lead when quarterback Maximus Barroso threw a pass to wide receiver Jaden Valenzuela for a 66 yard touchdown play. Ayala led 14-0 with 8:14 remaining in the second quarter.
Chino Hills, who holds the most wins in the annual rivalry game with 18 and with 8 straight wins from 2009 to 2017, cut Ayala’s lead in half on a 21 yard touchdown pass from quarterback Favian Vasquez to Cameron Bateman with 5:43 left in the second quarter.
On their very next possession, Monroe received the handoff and ran the ball up the middle to score the touchdown from seven yards out. Ayala led Chino Hills 21-7 with the 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
However, the Huskies continued to fight back as Chino Hills using a dual quarterback offense, quarterback Nolan Ellison connected on a 24 yard pass to Jalen Thompson for the touchdown. Chino Hills trailed 21-14 with 3:17 left in the second quarter.
Then, with under a minute left to play in the first half, it was the Huskies Ellison connecting a pass to Thompson. But, this time it was for 46 yards on the touchdown pass and Chino Hills tied the game 21-21 with Ayala going into halftime.
The Bulldogs started the second half receiving the ball. On their own 33 yard line, Ayala running back Jedi Hernandez received the handoff and with great blocking from his offensive line ran up the middle. The junior running back ran 67 yards to score the touchdown. The Bulldogs regained the lead 28-21 with 11:15 remaining on the clock in the third quarter.
Ayala would take a 34-21 lead into the fourth quarter after kicker Nick Lane split the uprights with two field goals. They were for 34 and 22 yards.
Chino Hills head coach Keland Johnson dug into his bag of tricks and the Huskies Ellison threw a pass to Cameron Bateman for 32 yards to score the touchdown on the revers flea flicker play. The Huskies trailed the Bulldogs 34-28 with 3:41 left in the game.
However, it was Ayala’s Monroe to put the finishing touches by scoring on a 46 yard touchdown run play. The Bulldogs were successful on the two point conversion to lead Chino Hills 42-28.
Ayala went on to win their sixth consecutive Battle for the Bone game and improves their overall record to 2-2. Chino Hills record going into Week Five is 3-2.
Monroe finished the game with 135 yards rushing on 16 carries and three touchdowns.
Barroso threw for 127 yards, one touchdown and an interception.
In Week 5, Chino Hills will be at home to play Foothill (3-1) and Ayala will play away against Citrus Valley (1-3).
