The pace of the match favored Ayala, but misfires on key scoring chances in the first half tested the Bulldogs. Royal managed to take a 3-2 lead at halftime, with Ayala hitting the bar three times during the opening quarter. Sung Park’s lob shot and Kane Wukelich’s penalty shot kept the Bulldogs in the game, but they had ground to make up.
Ayala’s outstanding defense laid the foundation for a remarkable comeback in the third quarter. Trailing 6-4 with 2:52 left, the Bulldogs rallied with three goals in the final 80 seconds. Alex Sanchez De La Cruz, Sung Park, and Kane Wukelich’s strategic plays shifted the momentum in Ayala’s favor, giving them a 7-6 lead heading into the final period.
Royal managed to tie the game at 7-7, but Ayala demonstrated resilience and composure. Benjamin Trull’s decisive goal with 3:37 left sparked Ayala’s final push, followed by Colin Mulqueen’s second goal and Wukelich’s empty-netter that sealed the 10-7 victory. Bulldogs goalkeeper Tyler Johnson’s eight saves and crucial field blocks from teammates thwarted Royal’s attempts, limiting them to their third-lowest goal count of the season.
Ayala coach Kevin Hammond praised the team’s defensive prowess, emphasizing their dedication to stingy defense throughout the season. Despite finishing fourth in the challenging Palomares League, Ayala’s journey to the title showcased their growth as a team. Goalkeeper Tyler Johnson highlighted the importance of facing tough competition, stating that playing against formidable teams in their league prepared them for the playoffs.
Ayala’s triumph in the CIF Southern Section Division 5 championship is a testament to their resilience, strategic brilliance, and unwavering teamwork. The Bulldogs overcame early challenges, grew stronger through the season, and ultimately clinched their second section title in a thrilling victory. The Ayala boys water polo team has etched their name in the records of school history, and their journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes and fans alike.
