The second day of the Classic at Damien boys basketball tournament showcased an intense matchup between the Montebello Oilers and the Chino Hills Huskies. The Oilers, entering the game with a 9-6 record, had a promising start against the Huskies, who boasted an 11-4 record.
In the initial moments of the game, the Montebello offense came out blazing, scoring the first basket and landing two impressive three-pointers to take an early 8-0 lead within the first 90 seconds. However, the Huskies quickly rebounded, orchestrating a remarkable 27-4 run, finishing the first quarter with a commanding 27-12 lead.
Omar Reese emerged as a key player for the Huskies, contributing 18 points to their impressive offensive performance. By halftime, Chino Hills maintained a comfortable 44-28 lead over the Montebello Oilers.
The Huskies’ zone pressure defense proved to be a formidable challenge for the Oilers, limiting them to only one basket in the third quarter, and Chino Hills extended their lead to 62-30 by the end of the third.
Despite the Oilers’ efforts in the fourth quarter, with Ryan Ramirez leading the scoring with 15 points, the Huskies’ defense continued to dominate. The final score reflected Chino Hills’ dominance, with a resounding 76-34 victory.
With this win, Chino Hills advances to the next round of the Classic at Damien tournament, maintaining their spot in the winners’ bracket. Their next challenge awaits as they face Western Christian, who secured their place with a victory over Pomona. The upcoming clash is scheduled for Thursday, December 28th, with tipoff at 8 pm at Charter Oak High School.
Chino Hills now stands with an impressive 12-4 record, while Western Christian enters the matchup with an 11-6 record.
