The Gano League kicked off its first week of action in Week 8, a week later than most other area leagues. Both the Don Lugo Conquistadors and the Chaffey Tigers entered the contest with identical 2-5 records, but the similarities ended there. Don Lugo, known for its high-octane Air Raid offense led by senior quarterback Kaleb Pacheco, hosted the run-heavy Chaffey Tigers, whose offense relied on senior running back Rayvon Adams’ powerful ground attack.

First Quarter Action

Don Lugo struck first after a promising drive to the Chaffey 5-yard line. On the very next play, Pacheco connected with junior wide receiver Blake Laporte on a short pass to the right, finding him wide open in the end zone for the touchdown. The Conquistadors took an early 7-0 lead.

Chaffey quickly responded as their dynamic running game came to life. Justin Alcantara found the end zone on a 20-yard run. However, the Tigers missed the extra point, leaving them trailing 7-6 with 4:58 left in the first quarter. Lugo wasted no time extending their lead as Pacheco executed a 1-yard quarterback keeper, making it 14-6 with 3:02 remaining in the quarter.

Second Quarter Back-and-Forth

The second quarter saw the Tigers’ ground game roar back. Alcantara once again powered his way to the end zone on a 20-yard run, his second touchdown of the game. Chaffey converted the 2-point attempt to tie the game 14-14 with 11:07 left in the second quarter. Alcantara finished the night with 12 carries for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Don Lugo responded with precision through the air, as Pacheco found Laporte again, this time for an 8-yard touchdown pass despite tight coverage from a Chaffey defender. Lugo regained the lead 21-14 with 7:21 remaining in the half. Laporte finished the night with 9 receptions for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Third Quarter: Chaffey Strikes Back

Chaffey wasn’t done yet. Rayvon Adams broke loose for a 40-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, cutting the Don Lugo lead to 28-22 with 10:15 left in the third. Adams had an impressive night, finishing with 19 carries for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

However, Lugo’s offense remained relentless. Pacheco unleashed a deep 42-yard pass, extending the lead to 36-22 with 7:18 remaining in the third.

Fourth Quarter Dominance

The fourth quarter saw Pacheco secure his fifth touchdown pass of the night, a 52-yard bomb that all but sealed the game, giving Don Lugo a 43-28 lead with 4:45 left to play. Pacheco was nearly perfect, completing 23 of 25 passes for 300 yards.

Chaffey added one more score late in the game, with Adams breaking free for a 52-yard touchdown run. Despite the effort, the Tigers couldn’t close the gap, and the game ended with Don Lugo winning 43-30.

With the victory, Don Lugo improved to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in Gano League play, while Chaffey dropped to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in league. Don Lugo will look to continue their momentum as they face Rowland at home next Friday, while Chaffey will host Montclair.
