First Quarter Highlights

In the first round of the CIF-SS Division 3 Playoffs, Powell showed his abilities as the first play of the game’s opening drive; he threw a 63-yard pass completion.

However, the Chino Hills Huskies defense took an early stand and kept the Cowboys from scoring in the opening drive.

Powell, injured early in the season with an ACL sprain, showed he was operating on all cylinders.

The Cowboys used a good mixture of the pass and run game to drive the ball to the Huskies 2-yard line. That’s when Cajon’s Brandon Rivers ran the ball into the endzone to score the touchdown and put the first points on the scoreboard.

Rivers was the team’s leading rusher, as the senior running back had 438 rushing yards and five touchdowns in league play.

Cajon attempted the 2-point conversion but was unsuccessful. With 5:55 left in the first quarter, the Cowboys took the 6-0 lead.

Powell completed 24 of 33 passes for 442 yards and three touchdowns in the game and threw his first touchdown, which was a 10-yard pass that connected with wide receiver Hector Garcia.

The Cowboys extended their lead 12-0 as their second 2-point conversion attempt in the game was unsuccessful, with 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Chino Hills drove to the Cajon 17-yard line. On 4th and 3, the Huskies elected to go for the first down.

Quarterback Alex Medyn connected his pass to Matthew Tarabey. The senior wide receiver made the catch and ran the ball into the endzone to put Chino Hills on the scoreboard to trail Cajon 12-7 with 7:37 left in the first half.

Cajon didn’t let the Huskies touchdown stop their momentum, as the Cowboys quickly scored on their next possession. Powell threw a 49-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Bjorn Birmingham.

For the third consecutive attempt, the Cowboys were unsuccessful at the 2-point conversion attempt and would lead Chino Hills 18-7 with 6:57 left in the second quarter.

The Cowboys would see Rivers score his second touchdown of the night from the 1-yard line with 1:26 left in the first half. The point-after-attempt kick was good, and Cajon would lead 25-7 at halftime.

Second Half Action and Key Moments

The Huskies got the ball to start the second half, but on their second play, they fumbled the ball. Cajon’s Jered Rennick recovered the ball.

Capitalizing on the turnover, Powell made a 16-yard scoring run on 4th and 14 to make it 32-7 with 7:10 in the third quarter.

The Huskies touchdown didn’t phase Cajon. On their next possession, Rivers would run the ball 49 yards for a touchdown. The Cowboys saw their lead grow 39-14 with 3:18 left in the third quarter.

Medyn would throw his second touchdown pass of the game when he landed a 29-yard pass to wide receiver Cameron Bateman. The Huskies trailed Cajon 39-22 with 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

The Cowboys scored twice in the fourth quarter. Once on a 16-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Landon White, the other touchdown was on a 4-yard run by Rivers, who rushed 26 times for 184 yards and four touchdowns.

Looking Ahead: Cajon Cowboys Next Opponent

Cajon’s 52-22 first-round victory advances the Cowboys to the second round, where they will be at home to face the Vista Murrieta Broncos. Vista Murrieta has an overall record of 7-2 and was the Big West – Upper League’s fourth-place team in the standings.
