The Rancho Cucamonga Cougars secured a commanding 65-47 victory over the Damien Spartans on Wednesday night in a pivotal Baseline League matchup. Both teams entered the game undefeated in league play at 3-0, but Rancho Cucamonga’s strong performance from start to finish gave them sole possession of first place and the top seed in the upcoming league tournament.
The Cougars (20-7, 4-0) wasted no time establishing their dominance, jumping out to a 17-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. Their advantage grew to 30-17 by halftime and 47-28 heading into the final period. The Spartans (18-7, 3-1) were unable to close the gap as Rancho maintained their momentum and controlled the game.
Senior guard Aaron Glass, a Texas A&M commit, was the standout player of the night, leading all scorers with 25 points. He also contributed six rebounds and five assists in an all-around performance that highlighted his leadership on the court. Key support for the Cougars came from Aiden Jensen, who recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Chu Chu Osuji, who added nine points and five rebounds. McKel Shedrick chipped in eight points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Izaiah Fiallos finished with seven points and four assists.
For Damien, junior forward Eli Garner led the way with 16 points, but the Spartans struggled to find a consistent offensive rhythm against Rancho Cucamonga’s defense. JC Corneille contributed nine points, and Elijah Smith added eight.
With the win, Rancho Cucamonga clinched the No. 1 seed for the inaugural Baseline League tournament, securing a first-round bye and home-court advantage for the semifinals and championship game if they advance. A league tournament title would mark the Cougars’ first league championship since 2013.
