The Diamond Bar Brahmas kicked off their 2025 baseball season at home against the Costa Mesa Mustangs, but despite a strong start, they came up short in a 4-2 loss on Monday.

Diamond Bar wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Jeremiah Jung ignited the Brahmas’ offense with a one-out double to center field. After advancing to third on a flyout in foul territory, Jung crossed home plate when Jacob Smith delivered in the clutch, driving a single into right field to put Diamond Bar up 1-0.

Costa Mesa responded in the top of the third. With two outs, Wylan Rottschafer was hit by a pitch and stole second, putting himself in scoring position. A walk to Omar Gutierrez set the table for Grady Jackson, who laced a 2-2 pitch into center field to bring in Rottschafer and even the game at 1-1. The Mustangs took their first lead moments later when Will Clark singled into left field, scoring Gutierrez for a 2-1 advantage.

Diamond Bar fought back in the bottom half of the inning. Isaac Insuasti led off with a single to center and promptly stole second. With two outs, Smith again delivered in a key moment, bringing Insuasti home with a base hit to tie the game at 2-2. Smith finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate with both of the Brahmas’ RBIs.

However, Costa Mesa found ways to capitalize on their opportunities. The Mustangs tacked on a run in the fourth inning and added another insurance run in the sixth to secure the 4-2 victory.
