The La Mirada Matadores notched their first win of the 2025 flag football season with a hard-fought 13-6 victory over the Los Altos Conquerors on a warm, muggy Monday evening. The result lifted La Mirada’s record to 1-3, while Los Altos slipped to 1-5.

Defensive Battle in the First Half

Both defenses set the tone early. On La Mirada’s opening drive, Los Altos defender Addison Kane intercepted a pass, giving the Conquerors excellent field position. Los Altos threatened inside the red zone, but the Matadores defense stood tall on fourth down to keep the game scoreless.

La Mirada tried to build momentum midway through the second quarter when quarterback Cynthia Wight found Abigail Herrera for a 30-yard connection. However, Los Altos answered with a defensive stand of their own, forcing a turnover on downs. Just before halftime, La Mirada’s Sarah Torres came up with a key interception, sending the game into the break tied 0-0.

Kane Sparks Los Altos

The Conquerors struck first after halftime. Kane broke loose for an electrifying 60-yard touchdown run, giving Los Altos a 6-0 advantage. That score held through the end of the third quarter as the Conquerors looked poised to claim their second win of the season.

Herrera Takes Over in the Fourth

The Matadores refused to go quietly. In the final quarter, Abigail Herrera turned the game around with two touchdown runs that energized her sideline and gave La Mirada a 13-6 lead.

From there, the Matadores’ defense clamped down, keeping the Conquerors off the board the rest of the way to seal the victory.

Looking Ahead

For La Mirada, the win represents a breakthrough after a tough start to the season. Herrera’s late-game heroics, combined with strong defensive efforts from Torres and her teammates, highlighted the grit and perseverance the Matadores will look to carry forward.

Los Altos, despite the loss, showed resilience and flashes of playmaking ability—especially from Kane, whose interception and long touchdown run showcased her all-around impact.
