The Anaheim Colonists secured a hard-fought 19-0 victory over the La Mirada Matadores in a defensive battle that featured timely plays and highlight-reel moments. With the win, Anaheim improved to 3-9 on the season, while La Mirada dropped to 2-6.

First Quarter – Avelar Sets the Tone

Quarterback Alyssa Avelar opened the game with a series of quick, precise passes to Ashley Guzman as Anaheim looked to establish rhythm. La Mirada’s defense answered early, with Sarah Torres breaking up a key pass on fourth down to stop the Colonists’ initial drive.

On their next possession, Avelar stuck to her short-passing game, methodically moving the Colonists downfield. Inside the red zone, she connected with Melody Cortes for a touchdown, giving Anaheim a 6-0 lead after one quarter.

Second Quarter – Highlight Catches Fuel Colonists’ Surge

La Mirada nearly answered when quarterback Cynthia Wight found Abigail Herrera on a spectacular 30-yard completion. But Anaheim’s defense held strong, forcing a punt.

The Colonists quickly capitalized. Avelar launched a deep pass to Sophia Sewell for a touchdown, then followed it up on the next drive with a back-of-the-end zone strike to Valerie Florido, who showed remarkable concentration with a toe-tapping, 7-yard catch.

The dazzling grab capped off a dominant first half, sending Anaheim into halftime with a 19-0 lead.

Second Half – Defenses Take Over

In the second half, Anaheim shifted gears, with Florido taking snaps at quarterback and spreading the ball to Guadalupe Prudente, Guzman, and Ashley Montes to keep drives alive.

La Mirada turned to its ground game, with Stevie Leon powering through for tough yardage. On defense, Frida Villagran recorded a timely sack, while Torres added a late interception to highlight the Matadores’ resilience.

Neither team found the end zone after halftime as defenses controlled the pace, sealing Anaheim’s 19-0 shutout.

Looking Ahead

The Colonists (3-9) will look to build momentum when they host the Savanna Rebels (3-3). The Matadores (2-6) aim to rebound on the road against the Schurr Spartans (2-2).
