The Chino Cowboys varsity softball team showed resilience and firepower in back-to-back games, rallying from early deficits in both contests to earn dramatic wins over Diamond Bar and Chaffey on March 16–17.

In two very different games, the Cowboys proved the same point: this is a team that never quits.

Game 1: Cowboys Storm Back to Edge Diamond Bar 7-6

On Monday, March 16, the Cowboys hit the road to face the Diamond Bar Brahmas and found themselves in an early hole.

Diamond Bar capitalized on an error in the first inning and exploded for five runs in the second to build a commanding 6-0 lead.

But Chino never flinched.

The Cowboys mounted a six-run rally in the top of the fourth inning, fueled by timely hitting. Gwen Jimenez sparked the surge with a double, while Brooklyn Leff, Evelyn Ornelas, and Kaylee Cardoza each delivered RBI singles to even the score at 6-6.

With momentum fully on their side, Chino delivered the decisive blow in the top of the fifth. Ornelas came through in the clutch with an RBI double, giving the Cowboys their first lead of the game at 7-6—a lead they would not relinquish.

Kristine Lancaster earned the win in relief, delivering a strong performance in the circle. She allowed just one run over 5 2/3 innings, scattering eight hits while striking out three. Jianna DelaRosa started the game, allowing five runs (four earned) over 1 1/3 innings.

Offensively, Chino pounded out 12 hits. Melody Stark led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate. Jimenez and Ornelas each drove in two runs, while Leff and Cardoza added multiple hits.

Diamond Bar finished with 14 hits, with several players contributing multi-hit efforts, but the Cowboys’ late-game execution proved to be the difference.

Game 2: Offensive Explosion Lifts Cowboys Past Chaffey 18-8

24 hours later, the Cowboys returned home on Tuesday, March 17, and once again had to dig themselves out of an early deficit—this time against the Chaffey Tigers.

Chaffey jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings, taking advantage of timely hits and defensive miscues.

But just like the afternoon before, Chino responded.

The Cowboys erupted for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game, highlighted by a two-run double from Clarissa Monarez and additional RBIs from Kristine Lancaster, Melody Stark, and Taylor Smith.

In the third inning, Chino briefly took the lead behind an RBI triple from Evelyn Ornelas and a run-scoring groundout by Kaylee Cardoza.

Chaffey answered in the fourth to regain the lead, setting the stage for a decisive turning point.

That turning point came in the bottom of the fifth.

Chino unleashed an offensive avalanche, scoring 11 runs on nine hits to break the game wide open and take an 18-8 lead. Lancaster delivered the biggest hit of the inning with a two-run double, capping off the explosive frame.

Brooklyn Leff led the offensive charge with a flawless 4-for-4 performance, collecting four singles across the game.

The Cowboys finished with 18 hits, with Lancaster, Monarez, and Cardoza each driving in three runs. Smith, Jimenez, and Ornelas all contributed multi-hit performances, while the team showed patience at the plate with six walks and aggressiveness on the bases with four stolen bases.

Sophia Perea earned the win, going five innings while allowing eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits, striking out four.

Chaffey also tallied 12 hits, with Sienna Retamoza driving in two runs and Delmie Rose Garcia adding a multi-hit effort.
