ANAHEIM — On a field that has hosted World Series games and Major League no-hitters, Diamond Bar sophomore Stetson Sherman delivered one of his own Tuesday afternoon.

Pitching at Angels Stadium, Sherman threw a complete-game no-hitter to lead the Brahmas to a 7-0 victory over Palmdale, needing just 70 pitches to navigate seven dominant innings.

The right-hander struck out eight and walked one, facing 22 batters in a performance defined as much by efficiency as execution.

“Both starters threw very well, but the efficiency of Stetson, only a sophomore, allowed him to outlast their starter,” Diamond Bar head coach Damien Muir said. “Our pitching coach, Marty Sewell, has preached efficiency from our starters all season, and Stetson was a model of that.”

Sherman, who has averaged 12.4 pitches per inning this season, was in command throughout, mixing his pitches and consistently getting ahead in counts. For Muir, the setting only added to the significance.

“Stetson was at the top of his game, executing all of his pitches,” he said. “Pitching on an MLB mound can be intimidating for some, but he definitely rose to the occasion.”

The moment carried added meaning for Sherman, who was unable to pitch in last year’s game at Angels Stadium because of an injury.

“He has been waiting for this moment for over a year,” Muir said. “It will be one that he remembers for the rest of his life.”

Diamond Bar (9-4) provided just enough offense early before breaking the game open late.

The Brahmas took a 1-0 lead in the second inning when freshman Elijah Kim lined a two-out single to left field, scoring Matias Gallardo, who had reached on an error.

That was all Sherman would need, but Diamond Bar added breathing room in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate in a six-run inning that put the game out of reach.

The rally included four singles, a walk, a hit batter, and an error, with Matt Villagracia delivering a two-run hit and Gallardo scoring twice in the game. Kim reached base three times, and Jacob Smith added an RBI as part of a balanced offensive effort.

According to the official box score, Diamond Bar finished with seven runs on five hits, drawing five walks and taking advantage of two Palmdale errors. The Brahmas did not commit an error.

Sherman capped the victory by retiring the final hitters he faced in order, completing the no-hitter victory.

The performance also continued Diamond Bar’s recent run of pitching success. Muir noted that the program’s previous no-hitter came earlier this season — thrown by senior Jacob Smith, who was behind the plate catching Sherman’s gem.

“Stetson has committed himself to pitching and is the hardest worker in our program,” Muir said. “He battled injuries throughout his freshman year, but added 20 pounds of muscle and put in a tremendous amount of work. Now he’s fully healthy and showcasing his ability.”

Despite growing attention from colleges, Sherman has remained grounded, according to his coach.

“He’s an extremely humble kid,” Muir said.

Palmdale (6-7) was held hitless and struck out eight times, unable to solve Sherman’s command or disrupt his rhythm at any point in the game.

Diamond Bar will return to action Friday, traveling to Gary High School for a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
