The Ayala Bulldogs are remaining on par with their second consecutive year going undefeated, (5-0), heading into Palomares League play.
Even with three potential touchdown plays called back due to penalties, the Bulldogs went on to get the 26-15 win over Brea Olinda, (3-2).
It was a perfectly executed flea-flicker play that put Ayala in the lead early in the first quarter. The short pass from quarterback Cole McCain to Gilbert Duran and Duran throwing the ball to Jordan Williams in the end zone for the 30-yard touchdown.
Brea Olinda would drive to the Bulldogs 21-yard line and kicker Kyle O’Brien would make the 38-yard field goal as the Wildcats trailed 7-3 in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs would come back and score on a 71-yard pass play from McCain to Marcus Monroe Jr., but a penalty flag for an illegal block on Ayala negated the touchdown ending the drive.
Brea Olinda couldn’t get a drive started on their next possession as the Ayala defense held the Wildcats to their own one yard line. A low snap to quarterback Justus Thongphrachanh didn’t allow the senior quarterback enough time to get out of the end zone where Thongphrachanh was tackled for the safety. The Bulldogs lead was 9-3 with 10:53 remaining in the second quarter.
Ayala would drive to the Wildcats five yard line and on fourth down Bulldogs kicker Noah Carlton split the uprights to extend the Bulldogs lead 12-3 with 9:05 remaining in the first half.
Two consecutive touchdown plays for Ayala were called back due to penalties. Ayala attempted the 31-yard field goal kick with a few seconds left in the first half. The kick from the Bulldogs Carlton was wide right and the score remained 12-3 at halftime.
Brea Olinda opened up the second half with possession of the ball. However, Ayala’s Andrew Aguilar intercepted a pass from Wildcats quarterback Thongphrachanh. The Bulldogs drive ended suddenly as quarterback McCain’s pass was intercepted by the Wildcats Marlow Perez who turned it into a pick six and running 57-yards for the touchdown.
The extra point attempt was unsuccessful and Brea Olinda trailed 12-9 with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Ayala offense struck again. On second and goal from the Wildcats nine yard line McCain connected with Aguilar for the touchdown pass. The Bulldogs led the Wildcats 19-9 with 11:03 remaining in the game.
Still in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs offensive line helped open a lane for running back Jacob Badawi who ran the ball 51-yards into the end zone. Ayala jumped to a 26-9 lead.
Brea Olinda’s offense scored one more time as quarterback Thongphrachanh’s pass was caught by O’Brien in the end zone for the 23-yard touchdown reception. The PAT was unsuccessful and the Wildcats trailed 26-15.
Ayala ran the clock out and went on to get the victory 26-15 to remain undefeated.
