The CIF Southern Section Division 1 softball playoffs delivered a historic second-round thriller Saturday afternoon, as Orange Lutheran outlasted Chino Hills, 17-14, at Orange Lutheran High School.

The postseason matchup turned into one of the highest-scoring games in the division’s history. With 31 combined runs, Orange Lutheran and Chino Hills played the third-highest-scoring Division 1 softball game, or previous equivalent, in CIF Southern Section history. It was also the highest-scoring game at that level since 1975, when Simi Valley defeated Mary Star of the Sea in Division 4A, then the top division.

Saturday’s game featured 30 combined hits and six home runs, with Orange Lutheran finishing with 16 hits and Chino Hills collecting 14 in a matchup packed with momentum swings and late-inning drama.

Orange Lutheran advanced to the quarterfinals, while Chino Hills saw its season come to an end with a 21-8 record.

The Lancers struck first in the bottom of the first inning, building a 4-0 lead after Sierra Nichols reached on an infield single, stole second and third, and scored on a throwing error. Rylee Silva later delivered a two-run single to cap the inning.

Chino Hills answered in the top of the second. Brett Lambrecht drove in a run with a double, and Jordyn Sherrill followed with a two-run double to cut Orange Lutheran’s lead to 4-3.

The Lancers responded with another four-run inning in the bottom of the second, stretching their advantage to 8-3. But the Huskies quickly climbed back into the game in the third, as Milena Medyn hit a two-run home run to center field and Lambrecht followed with a two-run homer to left field, trimming the deficit to 8-7.

Orange Lutheran created more separation in the fourth inning. Silva drove in a run with a double before freshman Eliza Johnson came off the bench and delivered a three-run home run to center field, extending the Lancers’ lead to 12-7.

Chino Hills continued to apply pressure in the fifth when Sherrill drove in two more runs to bring the Huskies within 12-9.

Orange Lutheran answered again in the bottom half of the inning with five runs on four hits. Silva hit a two-run home run, and Nichols added a two-run homer to right field, the first home run of her high school career, giving the Lancers a 17-9 lead.

The Huskies did not go quietly.

Chino Hills put together a five-run sixth inning to turn the game back into a three-run contest. Lambrecht continued her standout afternoon with a two-run double, and Lianna Ferrara followed with a three-run home run over the left-field fence to pull the Huskies within 17-14.

Orange Lutheran then turned to sophomore pitcher Charlee Pierpont, who retired all four batters she faced to earn the save. Pierpont worked a clean seventh inning against the top of the Chino Hills lineup, recording a groundout and two flyouts to close the game.

Lambrecht led Chino Hills offensively, going 3 for 3 with a walk, five RBIs, and four runs scored. She finished a triple shy of the cycle after collecting two doubles and a home run.

Medyn, Sherrill, and Ferrara also delivered key run-producing swings for the Huskies. Isabella Carrillo scored four runs for Chino Hills.

For Orange Lutheran, Silva went 3 for 4 with six RBIs while also earning the win in the circle. Nichols finished 4 for 5 and fell a double shy of the cycle. Madelyn Armendariz also went 4 for 5 with three doubles, while Carlyn Snyder scored four runs.

The Lancers improved to 21-8 and advanced to face La Habra in the quarterfinals. Chino Hills concluded its season at 21-8 after pushing one of Southern California’s top programs to the final inning in a playoff game defined by offense, resilience, constant momentum shifts, and a place in CIF Southern Section softball history.
