Don Lugo High School closed its summer 7-on-7 series Wednesday night by hosting Ayala in the final event of a five-week passing-league schedule organized by the Conquistadors.

Under new head coach Pete Smolin, Don Lugo hosted five Wednesday-night competitions between June 3 and July 15, welcoming programs from throughout Southern California for offseason development and competition.

Ayala, also preparing for its first season under new head coach Todd Quinsey, defeated Don Lugo in the final week on July 15.

While the Bulldogs came away with the victory, the evening marked the completion of a productive summer series for the Conquistadors. The weekly events gave Don Lugo’s quarterbacks, receivers and defensive backs valuable repetitions as the program continued preparing for the upcoming fall season.

The 7-on-7 format allows teams to work primarily on their passing offenses and pass coverage without offensive and defensive linemen. For Don Lugo, the competitions also provided Smolin and his coaching staff with opportunities to evaluate players, introduce offensive and defensive concepts and build communication throughout the roster.

Don Lugo welcomed a wide range of programs during the summer series. Participating schools included Ayala, Claremont, Diamond Ranch, Sierra Vista, Ontario, Workman, Arroyo Valley, Temecula Prep, South Hills, Granite Hills, and Western Christian.

The final matchup brought together two Chino Valley programs entering new chapters under their respective head coaches. Both Don Lugo and Ayala used the summer competition to develop their passing games, evaluate personnel, and prepare players for the transition into full-team practices.

With its summer 7-on-7 schedule complete, Don Lugo will now turn its attention toward the next stage of preparations for the 2026 high school football season.
